Slow and steady, not unlike the tortoise, travel is starting up again. We’ve all spent the past few months exploring our souls — so why not explore the soul of India?

The travel industry can come up with plan B, C, and D during the pandemic. But we have no PLANET B. It’s time to start travelling local, supporting local, and sustaining local.

Everyone knows India is diverse — from the local chaiwala to the global citizen backpacker. Corners steeped in superstitions, immersions of various cultures and traditions. Destinations in India range from vibrant and home-like to downright cool and eccentric.

This festive season, why not veer off the beaten track? Learn and explore something new, and stay away from crowds to boot? This is Unhotel’s list of FOUR UNCOMMON UNDESTINATIONS for your Buh-Bye 2020 vacay.

Kalagarh National Park, Uttarakhand*

*The Corbett/Kalagarh region has multiple official Unhotels. You can contact us if you’d like to book it for your Diwali or winter vacation!

You’ve probably visited Corbett National Park, right — the stories of man-eaters and Corbett Omnibus? Then you know all about this famous tiger reserve? Wait…you don’t? Why, it’s the northern tip of Corbett! Nestled in Uttarakhand, and given its own name for its high density of tigers and leopards, Kalagarh is a haven of its own.

What’s great about Kalagarh is that its lesser known status actually makes it quieter and a nicer, calmer visit. Especially for the fluffy little birds, many species of which visit the region! It’s a bit of a birding heaven.

We actually feel like one of the best ways to get to know a place like this is to befriend a local. Kalagarh has actually been a favourite destination of ours for many years — for families and kids, especially! There’s so much to learn about sustainable living and becoming responsible when you’re out in nature.

In fact, if you stop by the Ramnagar village and cross the Ramganga River, our Eco Lodge by the River lets you experience that for yourself. You can go for an early morning trek to spot some birds — or swim in the river (or maybe just dip your toes..it is getting colder now). And the evenings spent around the bonfire. It’s a true forest immersion in Kalagarh.

Sariska National Park, Rajasthan*

*This place has an official Unhotel. You can contact us if you’d like to book it for your Diwali or winter vacation!

Okay, so you might’ve already visited Corbett and Ranthambore and Bandipur. But have you stepped into the forests of Sariska? That’s right — Sariska National Park. Expansive and beautiful, the journey to Sariska is dotted with culturally-vibrant villages and old fort ruins.

The Sariska Palace itself is a sight to behold. Full of stories of the Maharajas of the old days. And if you’re a fan of slightly spookier stories, Sariska is where the famous Bhangarh fort is. You might’ve heard of it. One of the most haunted spots in an already super haunted state? If you’re feeling mighty, drop by for a visit there as you explore this region.

But our little secret of enjoying Sariska is to actually experience it underneath the night sky — by staying in a tent. Away from the light and air pollution of towns, Sariska is most beautiful at night. The blanket of stars is unparalleled, and we can actually help you enjoy it!

Our Unhotel in Sariska lets you stay in either a stone cabin or a modern tent, whatever makes you feel closer and comfortable to the rustic vibe. You can spend your evenings by the lake enjoying tea and listening to birds, and the day time roaming under the cover of green trees and doing yoga. A great way to start a new season, if you ask us.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands

You can’t say you’ve travelled from the North to the South of India if you’ve missed out on our island delights. From scuba diving and snorkelling to parasailing and sea walking, this tropical paradise is the hub of aqua adventures. Whether you are looking for a happening nightlife, or some time alone in peace and tranquillity surrounded by a serene seascape, this place has it all.

The historical Cellular Jail, also known as Kala Paani, was once a colonial prison, used by the British to imprison political prisoners. Now, this cellular complex serves as a national memorial monument. Why not see the light and sound show here to end a fabulous evening?

Mud volcanoes are another reason why Andaman is popular among tourists all around the world. There are more than 25 mud volcanoes located in Andaman, with most of them found in Diglipur and Baratang island.

In Jolly Buoy Island you will find the best view of the multi-coloured coral reefs that Andaman is famous for. And, hey! If you are afraid of the water, you could experience the underworld of the Andaman’s Islands by taking a glass boat ride which gives you a good view of the coral reefs and marine life beneath you. You can also witness the bioluminescence on the Beach of Havelock Island where water glows and galaxies appear under your feet as you row your boat.

Badami — Dandeli — Karwar Circuit, Karnataka

Located in Mumbai or Bangalore and tired of the same old Goa, Pondicherry, Lonavala weekends? Well, that’s a shame. Because North Karnataka has a lot to offer. Badami, Dandeli, and Karwar together make up (what we like to call) the Silver Circuit of the South. Golden Circuits are so 1990s.

Oft forgotten, Badami is actually home to some of the lushest forests of Karnataka — not to mention some wonderful historical spots! It’s best known for its cave temples, full of intricate carvings INSIDE the giant rocks. In fact, from the nearby Temple and fort to Aihole, all of these places have stories in art form and wall carvings.

Dandeli, compared to the more historical and arid ways of Badami, is your dive into the forests of the region. It’s for the adventurer. The rafter, the rock climber, the camper, the canyon rappeler. And listen — even if you’re not an adventurer. Taking a romantic boat ride on a lake, under the moonlight, never hurt anyone.

And that’s not all. This circuit also checks the box for beach enthusiasts! Hit the West Coast with Karwar. Karwar is to Gokarna, what Gokarna was to Goa a few years ago. Quiet, slower, less crowded. Not only has it got beaches, it’s also got cool islands and lighthouse rocks to explore! Plus, for those who like seeing cultural history, it’s got a Warship Museum, and a variety of temples and famous dargahs. Do you really want to miss out on this perfect trio?

So, what are you waiting for? Tropical beaches, cool hill stations, the lush forests of the North, and the array of the Western Ghats — the winter is beckoning you to take a trip. Head to one of these places.

Finding yourself in one of these local hotspots is not only a new thing to learn about India. It’s a way to experience an Indian holiday in a way you never have before.

And if you’re looking for something else? Check out our website for some fun and unique stays across India.
